This is the story about how ArtDeadlines.com is using name/identity theft to confuse people about the Art Deadlines List and take advantage of my name and web reputation. A couple of years ago, and after HOTMAIL had some millions of users, a pornography company bought the URL/domain name HTOMAIL.COM. With many millions of users typing in the URL for HOTMAIL, some thousands every day mistyped the URL. That means they ended up on the pornography site. It even happened to me at least once. As you might imagine Microsoft, which now owns HOTMAIL, looks down upon anybody who might try to buy and use that domain name. Unfortunately I don't have quite the clout of HOTMAIL/ Microsoft. It would cost me a minimum of $1500 to open a case against the owner of ARTDEADLINES.COM (who also owns ARTDEADLINE.COM, etc). The individual in question originally contacted me about reselling my publication. At some point, after learning some things about my enterprise, he reversed himself and went off to start his own publication for the same audience. He then decided to use the similar name in order to catch individuals who did not type the name of my URL exactly. You can find copies of the ART DEADLINES LIST going all the way back to late 1994. On searching GOOGLE for the same phrase, you can find several thousand links to the ADL. When you search for ARTDEADLINES.COM you find a lot of links, but on looking further into the list you find they are simply pages with slightly different information on them--or alternate names for the same pages. This is considered to be a dubious way to get high ranking pages on a search. It means that other pages get pushed down and not considered. All the links to the ART DEADLINES LIST were placed there by independent page owners/publishers. I don't use bogus techniques to increase my ranking. I get a high rank by frequently updating my pages and having lots of links to my pages. There has always been a FREE version of the list for artists who can't afford my subscription fees. You won't find a free version on the site using name/identity theft! Also, my site include more information at a lower cost. Let me know if you have other questions about this.
