Trouble reading the attachment...

There are a number of explanations for why you might not be able to read the Art Deadlines List attachment...

Reasons/Explanations...

1) I didn't get the Art Deadlines List attachment.

One explanation is that I forgot to attach it. That happens from time to time--but rarely. Most likely your ISP or computer or email software decided the attachment was SPAM and trashed it!

You can solve this problem by telling your SPAM filter not to block the Art Deadlines List attachment.

If you can't do that, then the simplest solution is to get a free email account from HOTMAIL or YAHOO or the provider of your choice. Send me an email message indicating you want to change the email address to which your lists will be sent. Be sure to include the name, address, and email address you used to subscribe.

2) I got the attachment--but its way too short!

Your email software probably allows you to specify a maximum size for an attachment. The list can be from 200,000 to 500,000 bytes in length. Change the maximum length setting. Please note that I can't help you do this--you probably use email software different from mine. Talk to your ISP or the company that produces your email software.

If you can't do that, then the simplest solution is to get a free email account from HOTMAIL or YAHOO or the provider of your choice.

3) I drag and drop it into my word processor/browser... but see nothing, or I see gibberish, or everything is squeezed together with no sentence or paragraph breaks.

This means your word processor or browser doesn't know the file type of the Art Deadlines List attachment. You have to tell your software that the file is plain ASCII text.

Or try the Opera browser. It works on my Mac and PC. You can get it here:

http://opera.com

If you can't do that, then the simplest solution is to get a free email account from HOTMAIL or YAHOO or the provider of your choice.

4) I have a HOTMAIL (or YAHOO) free email account and still can't read the Art Deadlines List attachment.

Perhaps the account/messages has used up all the storage space you are allowed. The solution is to delete some messages.

Things change rapidly on the Internet. New SPAM filters are created practically every day--and certainly improved every day. ISPs are constantly fiddling with and adjusting their operating systems and user interface. The software you use on your computer is constantly being updated. Maybe your computer is like mine and, every now and then, changes some of my system settings. Recently my clock was reset to 1970, and my automatic dialup number for connecting to my ISP reverted to a phone number I'd used last year to debug a problem with my hardware. If it isn't one thing then its another. But its always something!

If it still doesn't work then you may have to consider converting to the paper version of the list. Information about that can be found here:

5) I think I got the attachment, but can't find it.

Look for a file with a name like this: 0401paid.lst

0401 means the January 2004 issue. Your system software should have a command for finding files on your computer.

Maybe you deleted it accidently--and you won't ever be able to find it no matter how long you look. Send an email asking me to send you another copy--be sure to include the name, address, and email address you used for your subscription. Send that message here:

adl@artdeadlineslist.com

6) Try renaming the document.

The attachment has a name like this: 0401paid.lst

Sometimes it will be renamed to this: 0401paid.lst.lst
by your system/software.

Try renaming it as a .DOC or .TXT file.
